Crohn's Disease Complications - Side Effects You Need to Know About

There are many side effects or complications that you get when you have Crohn's Disease and are taking drugs to help control it. What I'm going to talk about today though is some of the things that can happen when you are taking Prednisone/steroids, and what you need to be on the watch for.

I am no longer on medication for Crohn's Disease but when I was taking drugs the only thing that really had an effect on me was high dose Prednisone. After being on and off of this medication for around 10 years I had some lingering effects that I would rather be without. Even though my doctor was working to manage these risks, they were still there and I still have to deal with them to this day.

One of the major problems that I got from being on steroids was thinning of my bones. Being on them long term even though I was taking calcium had made my bones brittle. For someone my age and this was predisposing to having osteoporosis later in life.

Even though I should be able to repair most or all the damage done to my bones because I am young, through supplementation and weight/load bearing exercise I would much rather not have to have gone down this road. Another issue that can be a problem for long term steroid use is blood sugar issues. If you are taking steroids your doctor will be monitoring this through regular blood tests, as Prednisone can cause you to have raised blood sugar levels which can be likened to diabetes. This is something that needs to be closely monitored so that you don't end with problems in a few years time or later in life.

A lesser known problem that can occur when you take steroids long term is getting Candida or a yeast infection of some kind. If you are taking both antibiotics and steroids at the same time this is more likely to occur as the antibiotics will kill the good bacteria in your gut. The steroids will suppress your immune system and the body finds it harder to deal with things.

A way you can test to see if yeast is a problem for you is when you first get up in the morning; before you have anything to drink or eat take a clear glass of warm water, gather some spit in your mouth, then spit in to the glass. You may need to leave it for a couple of minutes so that the strings of yeast can start to fall out. After that time you are looking for white stringy pieces that hang down from the top of the glass. There may also be some of the white stringy pieces that have sunk to the bottom of the glass.

If after a couple of minutes and there are no stringy white pieces hanging down, there is just your spit still on the top of the water then you have no problem with yeast, this is a good thing. If you do have a yeast problem then will you need to take some steps to make sure that you get rid of it and take the burden off your already stressed body to help bring your back to better health.
